Thomas and Jane Carlyle came down from Scotland to live in Chelsea in 1834 at what is now 24 Cheyne Walk.

Theirs was a famously unhappy marriage, summed up by the wicked quip: ‘It was fortunate that Thomas and Jane married each other, thus making only two people unhappy instead of four.’

The dour Scotsman retreated upstairs to his ‘soundproof study’ where he finished his most famous works.  ‘The French Revolution’ of 1837 (which inspired Dickens to write a certain novel concerning London and Paris) and ‘Frederick the Great’ (1857-65).
